The "Working Group on Paratethys Stratigraphy of the RCMNS" published during the years 1967-1985 the Miocene regional stratotypes for the central Paratethys sea. The Paratethys sedimentary basin represents one of the most complex basinal systems in the E uropean Tertiary. The first volume dealing with the stratotype of the Karpatian stage appeared in 1967 with all the negative signs, as for example the matter, methods and form are concerned, of the "first fruit publication" since the stratigraphical and general geological methods markedly improved and many subsequent studies on individual basins as well as the collective syntheses have been published. Also the European and world - wide correlations advanced considerably. Taking those results into consid eration the published definition of the Karpatian is obsolete and needs a thorough reinterpretation and amendments as well as a total formal frame (systematics of the floristic ad faunistic groups).
