In this project we want to pursue three major directions of ultrasound-driven material synthesis. The first is the nonaqueous sonochemical synthesis of binary and ternary oxides starting from homo- and heterometallic alkoxides, acetates, and diketonates. We will also synthesize more elaborate precuror molecules mimicking building units of solid networks, such as polyhedral metallosilanolates, and examine their sonochemical conversion to solid products. The second area of our interest is the preparation of metallophosphate compounds by ultrasound-activated nonhydrolytic reactions of phosphoric acid esters with metal amides, alkyls and halides. In addition, cyclic and polyhedral metallophosphonates will be used as precursors. In the third part we will examine the possibility to control the outcome of the sonochemical reaction by chemical means and prepare several different materials from one precursor by changing the reaction conditions and partners. As a model compound we chose copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate and we will attempt to prepare metallic Cu, CuO, CuS and Cu3N powders. In all three areas of our interest, we will study not only the chemical composition and morphology of solid products resulting from the sonochemical reaction but also the organic byproducts left behind in the reaction solution. From this knowledge we will attempt to deduce the early steps of the conversion mechanism from the precursors to the solid materials.
