The last food crisis in 60’s of the last century was successfully solved via innovative use of plant breeding, also called ‘the 1st green revolution’. Since that, the humankind is facing another severe challenge. Exponential population growth in a combination with delimited amount of arable land and stormy climate changes are threatening literally the basis of our civilization. Considering the recent prognosis predicting substantial deficit of food production as soon as in 2027, the onset of the ‘2nd green revolution’ must not be postponed.
The main goal of the project is to identify the key regulators allowing integration of environmental, hormonal and stress-related signalling pathways with epigenetic regulations as potential powerful targets useful in the generation of stress-resistant plants. The project aims to describe the genetic variability of key signalling pathways in Arabidopsis and selected crops. The information will be used for the targeted improvement of Brassica sp. and potato with ultimate goal to generate crops with higher survival and yield under (particularly drought) stress conditions.
To achieve the project objectives, we will employ the expertize of the project team in genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, analytical chemistry and engineering with up-to-date approaches in the plant phenotyping. The collaboration of academy (CEITEC-Central European Institute of Technology, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic) with local industrial partner (PSI - Photon Systems Instruments, Ltd., Drasov, Czech Republic) and key abroad collaborator (IPK - Leibniz-Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung, Gatersleben, Germany) will allow to maximize the mutual synergies generated in frame of the consortium and successfully solve all the project tasks.
Sustainable Development Goals
Masaryk University is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to improve the conditions and quality of life on our planet by 2030.
