Lack of collaboration between science and politics is harming the planet

PFAS substances – water and soil contaminants that will stay in the environment forever and their use is steadily growing. Endocrine disruptors that interfere with the human as well as the animal hormone system, causing various diseases including diabetes, obesity, and male infertility. Also, the by now extreme pollution of the planet by plastics and electronic waste. According to Martin Scheringer, professor of environmental chemistry, scientists are alerting politicians to these dire threats yet their warnings go unheeded.

Space exploration will soon experience a big boom, says the new holder of the “Austrian Nobel Prize”

Slovak astrophysicist Norbert Werner had an extraordinary week in the second half of March. On Monday, he watched the launch of the Soyuz rocket carrying the first nanosatellite for detection of gamma-ray bursts into orbit, on which he participated in the development. Just four days later, he received the Ignaz L. Lieben Award, also known as the ‘Austrian Nobel Prize’.

The botanical garden has opened its gates

We are very happy to announce that, since Monday April 12 2021, the outdoor part of our Botanical Garden has been opened to the public once again! Opening times are from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays (we are closed on weekends). The botanical garden is only accessible through the gate on Veveří Street.

A new scholarship programme

From April 1, 2021, the Faculty of Science is launching a new scholarship programme to support doctoral students’ mobilities. Outgoing students can now apply for a scholarship of up to CZK 100,000.
